The South African Fisheries Museum opened in Velddrif in December 2009. The museum exhibits the colourful history of fishing and the fishing industry of South Africa, and particularly the West Coast, from the intrepid days of whaling and whalers to the present-day pelagic and lobster fishing activities. This visitor’s experience is inextricably interwoven with the unique and colourful local history and culture of the people of the area.  The exuberance and resilience of west coast of South Africa is presented in the museum by multi-media presentations and personally assisted walk-throughs of the only museum honouring the history of fishing on the African continent.

It is a West Coast experience not to be missed!
