Montagu Museum

Montague staff

Montagu Museum incorporates several buildings. Joubert House, located on the original Uitvlucht farm, depicts 19th century lifestyle. The former magistrate’s court room and town’s first jail can also be seen on site. In addition, you can experience the areas botanical history in the gardens. The Old Mission Church with its neo-Gothic elements in its turrets and buttresses was built as a Dutch Reformed Mission Church in 1907. This beautiful building tells the story of the impact of forced removals. The congregation was forced to vacate the building due to apartheid legislation. The last service was held on 13 June 1970.

The museum displays bibles, benches, prayer books, portraits, the original pulpit, organ, baptismal font and mural, telling the story of the rural church and its members through their quoted words. It also exhibits stone tools and other artefacts associated with area’s original Khoekhoe and San residents. You can buy herbal remedies based on their indigenous knowledge.
