Lwandle Migrant Labour Museum

Lwandle Staff

One of the first township-based museums in the country, this museum focuses on labour issues and the migrant labour system in particular. The museum includes Hostel 33, the only remaining hostel used during the migrant labour system designed for single men in Lwandle. In 2018, Hostel 33 was declared a provincial heritage site.

Among the exhibitions, Workplace Stories highlights how workers are robbed of family and leisure time. This exhibition is one of the many ways in which the museum tells and educates the public about workplace stories from different communities. These stories were collected from KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape.

Siyanyanzela, is an exhibition about forced removals and the struggle to make a home in post-apartheid South Africa. It documents the forced removal of residents of Siyanyanzela in June 2014.
