Jan Danckaert Museum

Jan Danckaert

The museum is named after the leader of the first colonial reconnaissance expedition that travelled through the area in 1660. The building was used for several purposes over the years.  In 1879 it was built as a court and prison. Today, the prison cells are still visible and are used to exhibit the day-to-day life of the locals of yesteryear. In 1881/1885 the municipality purchased the building and used it as municipal offices. In 1976 and 1977 the building was used as a milk outlet and in 1979 it became a museum.

Unfortunately, the museum building is closed for structural repairs. However, functioning from a temporary location, the museum continues with its active educational and public programmes.
