The Beaufort West Museum, established as a small museum housed in two rooms in 1939, expanded to a complex of three buildings.
The Museum includes the Dutch Reformed parsonage in which world-renowned heart surgeon, Prof Chris Barnard, grew up. Rev Adam Barnard, served the community as a missionary and he and his family lived in the parsonage next to the Dutch Reformed Mission Church. The parsonage has been restored and furnished as in the time of the Barnard family. As it was Dr Barnard’s to return home, he is buried in the museum garden.
